About the Company

Bouand DanceCompany was founded in 2005 by director and choreographer Alexandrous Ballard to represent a contemporary and European performance aesthetic solidly based in classical tradition and training. That aesthetic is complemented by the company’s successful collaborations with musicians, theater, film and video designers.

The company is primarily dedicated to commissioning new works from young European and North American choreographers as well as presenting the work of its own artistic director. In its short history, Bouand has commisioned works by Rachel Tess (Ballet de Geneve/Cullberg Ballet), Erica Trivett (Ballet Gulbenkian, ROSAS), James Gnam (Plastic Orchid Factory, Vancouver BC), Jason Ohlberg (Same Planet Different World Company, Chicago), Walter Kennedy (Bela Lewitzky Dance Company), Deanna Carter (Aterballeto and The Leipzig Ballet), and is currently working with Davy Brun (Lyon Opera Ballet) in creation of a new work. In 2009, Alexandrous Ballard’s work “Sideshow,” featuring Portland band 3 Leg Torso performing live on stage, was filmed for a one-hour documentary on Oregon Public Broadcasting.

In addition to presenting and performing, Bouand conducts master classes and choreographic workshops for the local student dance community, as well as providing performance experience and opportunities for pre-professional students from The Portland ballet Academy and other local dance centers. In 2010, Bouand will initiate a summer residency at Portland State University with choreographer James Gnam.

Bouand features a core group of nine performers who have extensive professional pedigrees and is occasionally joined by guest dancers from Oregon Ballet Theater. Director Alexandrous Ballard brings a highly regarded teaching career both professionally and in academia, certification in the FM Alexander Technique, 12 years of training in Aikido as well as a 25 year professional career in companies such as Cleveland San Jose Ballet, Joyce Trisler Danscompany, Ballet Royale de Wallonie and Oregon Ballet Theater.

Bouand DanceCompany is a member of the Nonprofit Association of Oregon, DanceUSA, The Western Washington Arts Alliance, and the Work for Arts program sponsored by the Regional Arts and Culture Commission. It is the recipient of grants from the Regional Arts and Culture Council, the Larson Legacy, the Schnitzer/Novack Foundation and the Oregon Cultural Trust.
